Plastic waste makes up around 80% of all marine pollution, with millions of tonnes entering the ocean every year. Once discarded, plastic can take hundreds of years to break down into harmful microplastics.
To help tackle this, CLEAN Maldives introduced “Hodu Kothalhu” — a biodegradable paper bag designed to replace single-use plastic bags, including those used by seasick passengers on ferries and boats.
The initiative was showcased and distributed across the community as a simple, everyday switch with a lasting impact.
